SWCAS NEWSLETTER

Summer  2003

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

Summer greetings to SWCAS colleagues.  I begin this message with hearty thanks to Wing Chung Ng, Tracy Steele, and numerous referees for their continued dedication to the near completion of volume 3 of the SWCAS Journal.  As well, continued thanks go to Harold Tanner for his handling of the SWCAS coffer.  We are now just over four months away from our October 2003 meeting at the University of Houston and I encourage all interested parties to submit paper and panel proposals.  As we are a less formal conference, the “deadline” for the Call for Papers floats a great deal.  While we will continue to accept proposals through the summer, I encourage you all to submit proposals as soon as possible.  Information on Houston and the conference site can be found through the link “2003 Annual Meeting”.

The logistics for the 2003 meeting are in place as a result of the diligence of the conference Local Arrangements Chair Cong Xiaoping in the History Department at the University of Houston.  For those of you who attended the 2001 conference at UH, we will be in the same building and hotel this year.  Dr. Cong joined the SWCAS during her first year at UH and has been a wonderful, hard-working complement to our conference.  Also, through her efforts, the SWCAS is able to offer travel grants of $200 - $300 for this year’s conference.  These travel grants are available to students and non-tenure track faculty who will be presenting papers.

At this year’s conference, we will continue our collaboration with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, Texas.  I am currently working with their GIO to arrange a Friday evening dinner and after dinner speaker appropriate for our venue.  We will likely produce another videoconference.  Efforts continue to nail down a keynoter for dinner.

I wish all of you a productive summer and look forward to seeing everyone October 10 – 11, 2003 at the University of Houston.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions and comments.

SECRETARY-TREASURER’S REPORT

Under the excellent management of President Steele, the 2002 Annual Meeting at Sam Houston State University brought in $3,680.00 of income (including conference registrations, the $1,000.00 annual subvention from the AAS, and a $1,400.00 subvention for the teacher’s workshop that was run as a part of the meeting). This was more than enough to offset a total of $3,399.48 in expenses, thus netting a profit of $280.52.

The SWCAS had a balance of $3,665.27 in its account as of 20 December 2002. Anticipated future (expenses) and income include:

a.      Next SWCAS Journal                                    (550)

b.      Printing & mailing Directory                           (50)

c.       Printing & mailing Jan. newsletter                  (50)

d.      Printing & mailing summer newsletter           (50)

e.      Annual AAS subvention                                 1,000

In other words, I expect that the bank account will be close to $4,000 going into the fall of 2003—which is about where it should be. Please do not let this rosy financial picture discourage you from paying dues if you have not done so lately!

THE SWCAS WEBSITE

All members are strongly urged to check the SWCAS web page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The website is a particularly important source of information as you plan your attendance at the annual meeting. Webmaster Stephen Field generally posts preliminary schedules, hotel information, maps and other relevant information on the website several months in advance of the annual meeting.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

SWCAS dues are $15.00, which entitles the member to the biannual newsletter, a membership directory, and a copy of The Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. Membership is calculated on an academic year basis. We suggest that you make a habit of paying your dues in September or October—if you plan to attend the annual meeting, simply bring your checkbook and do the membership payment at the conference registration table.

If you have not paid your membership dues for the 2002-2003 academic year and would like to do so by mail, please fill out the membership form and send to:
