MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

The 2002 meeting of SWCAS at Sam Houston State University marked another successful conference for our group.  I thank Tracy Steele for hosting this year’s conference and she is to be commended for producing an excellent program, venue and conference facilities.  For the second year in a row, SWCAS and the Information Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston co-hosted a videoconference between conference attendees and a policy-maker in Taiwan.  This year’s videoconference guest was Democratic Progressive Party legislator Ms. Hsiao Bi-khim.  We thank Mr. Charles Chen, Director of the Information Division of TECO, for his generous assistance and financial support for the videoconference and dinner that preceded it.  The SWCAS owes an additional debt of gratitude to Craig Schlicher at Sam Houston State University for his technical direction.

This year’s conference sponsored nine panels with twenty-nine paper presentations.  We welcomed back most of the “usual suspects”, but also had a higher number of participants from outside the region.  Absenteeism was limited to one presenter this year, an encouraging sign.  We welcome our new board member, Chiho Sawada from UT in Austin and look forward to working with him.  Tracy Steele, last year’s president, agreed to serve as vice president for this year.  Harold Tanner has agreed to another term as Secretary Treasurer.  We also continue to enjoy the technical wisdom of our Webmaster, Stephen Field.  Wing Chung Ng and Tracy Steele will be co-editing the SWCAS Journal.  I encourage all of you to submit your conference papers to our editors for inclusion in the next journal.  Volume 3 of the SWCAS Journal will combine papers from 2001 and 2002 conferences in a single forthcoming issue.  Our apologies to those awaiting publication of manuscripts already accepted.  Submission information is provided in this newsletter.

In addition to arranging the conference, Tracy Steele also produced a Teacher’s Workshop, “Windows on Asia”.  The workshop was recognized by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented Awareness Certificate for teachers K-12 and was co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council and the Asia Society-Texas.  Kudos to Tracy for creating a wonderful outreach program.

The 2003 meeting will be held at the University of Houston on October 10-11th.  Dr. Xiaoping Cong, Assistant Professor of History, has graciously agreed to act as local chair.  Dr. Cong and I have also already begun to try to secure funding for the conference from the university.  If all goes well, we hope to offer small travel stipends to graduate students to attend the conference.  More on this down the road.  Prospects also look good at this point for an outreach opportunity with the Houston Museum of Fine Arts’ folks in the Asian Art Collection.  More of that down the road as well.

I’m looking forward to the coming year and humbly solicit your ideas about how we can continue to build on SWCAS’ success. Given that word of mouth is the best (and cheapest) marketing strategy, I strongly encourage each of you to discuss SWCAS participation with your colleagues and students.

SECRETARY-TREASURER’S REPORT

Under the excellent management of President Steele, the 2002 Annual Meeting at Sam Houston State University brought in $3,680.00 of income (including conference registrations, the $1,000.00 annual subvention from the AAS, and a $1,400.00 subvention for the teacher’s workshop that was run as a part of the meeting). This was more than enough to offset a total of $3,399.48 in expenses, thus netting a profit of $280.52.

The SWCAS had a balance of $3,665.27 in its account as of 20 December 2002. Anticipated future (expenses) and income include:

    1. Next SWCAS Journal                                (550)
    2. Printing & mailing Directory                          (50)
    3. Printing & mailing Jan. newsletter                  (50)
    4. Printing & mailing summer newsletter       (50)
    5. Annual AAS subvention                              1,000

In other words, I expect that the bank account will be close to $4,000 going into the fall of 2003—which is about where it should be. Please do not let this rosy financial picture discourage you from paying dues if you have not done so lately!

1.      All members are strongly urged to check the SWCAS web page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The website is a particularly important source of information as you plan your attendance at the annual meeting. Webmaster Stephen Field generally posts preliminary schedules, hotel information, maps and other relevant information on the website several months in advance of the annual meeting.
