MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

The 2004 meeting of SWCAS at Sam Houston State University marked another successful conference for our group.  I thank Tracy Steele for hosting this year’s conference and she is to be commended for producing an excellent program, venue and conference facilities.  For the fourth year in a row, SWCAS and the Information Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston co-hosted a videoconference between conference attendees and a policy-maker in Taiwan.  This year’s videoconference guest was Dr. H. H. Michael Hsiao, Executive Director of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies, Academia Sinica.  Dr. Hsiao’s presentation was titled, “The Paradigm Shift: The Rise of Taiwan National Identity”.  We thank Mr. Charles Chen, Director of the Information Division of TECO, for his generous assistance and financial support for the videoconference and dinner that preceded it.  Special thanks also go to Ms. Joy Yen (Yen Chu Lien) of the Information Division for her efficient and adept coordination of the information technology.  The SWCAS owes an additional debt of gratitude to Mr. Craig Schlicher at Sam Houston State University for his technical direction.

This year’s conference sponsored eleven panels with twenty-five paper presentations.  We welcomed back many of the “usual suspects”, but also once again enjoyed a higher number of participants from outside the region.  Absenteeism was limited to one presenter this year, always an encouraging sign.

Harold Tanner has agreed to another term as Secretary Treasurer.  We also continue to enjoy the technical wisdom of our Webmaster, Stephen Field.  I encourage all of you to submit your conference papers to our editors for inclusion in the next SWCAS Journal, but the deadline of January 28, 2005 is approaching fast.  Volume 5 of the SWCAS Journal will combine papers from 2003 and 2004 conferences in a single forthcoming issue.  Our apologies to those awaiting publication of manuscripts already accepted.  Submission information is provided in this newsletter.

2005 MEETING

The 2005 meeting will be held at the University of North Texas October 7-8th in Denton, Texas.  Dr. Harold Tanner, Professor of History, has graciously agreed to act as local chair.  The program co-chairs are Dr. Hans Stockton (stockton@stthom.edu) of the University of St. Thomas and Dr. Johan Elverskog (jelversk@mail.smu.edu ) of Southern Methodist University.  If all goes well, we hope to offer small travel stipends to graduate students to attend the conference.  More on this down the road.

I’m looking forward to the coming year and humbly solicit your ideas about how we can continue to build on SWCAS’ success. Given that word of mouth is the best (and cheapest) marketing strategy, I strongly encourage each of you to discuss SWCAS participation with your colleagues and students.

THE SWCAS WEBSITE

All members are strongly urged to check the SWCAS web page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The website is a particularly important source of information as you plan your attendance at the annual meeting. Webmaster Stephen Field generally posts preliminary schedules, hotel information, maps and other relevant information on the website several months in advance of the annual meeting.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

SWCAS dues are $15.00, which entitles the member to the biannual newsletter, a membership directory, and a copy of The Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. Membership is calculated on an academic year basis. We suggest that you make a habit of paying your dues in September or October—if you plan to attend the annual meeting, simply bring your checkbook and do the membership payment at the conference registration table.

If you have not paid your membership dues for the 2004-2005 academic year and would like to do so by mail, please fill out the membership form and send to:
