Interest Groups

Book Review Group

Chair – Sandra Kurtin

The book group will read five books during the year. We usually meet on the third Tuesday of alternate months at 7:00 pm in the homes of members.
The first selection for the 2011-2012 year is Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson. Sandra Kurtin will be hostess for September 20th. Future books will be chosen when the group meets. Other meetings will be on November 15, January 17, March 20th and May 15th.

Culinary Capers

Chairs—Mary Jane Judd, Carol Roy, and Andrea Spanley

This group meets three times for lunch at the homes of members on dates to be announced during the months that we do not have regular TUWC meetings. Members may bring their choice of salad, main dish, or dessert along with the recipe.

Dining Explorations

Chair – Carol Mansen

A fun opportunity to try some great San Antonio res-taurants with spouse, significant other or just other TUWC members. We will go to four difference restaurants during the year (September, December, March and June).

Dutch Treat Lunches

Chairs: Judy Golliher & Mary Elaine McElreath

Lunch together at restaurants around town. Members are either called or e-mailed about time and place.

Film and Fiction

Chair – Marguerite Barzun

Members meet for a movie and discussion of each novel on the Tuesdays listed below. The meeting time is 10:00 a.m.; the location will be the home of Genie Calgaard. All the books are easily available. Participants often enjoy lunch afterward.

October 11, 2011 “Julie and Julia” -based on two books about Julia Child. Please read “My life in France” by Julia Child. If enthusiastic, you may also read : Julie and Julia by Julie Powell.

November 8, 2011 “The Remains of the day”. The novel by the same title is by Kuzuo Ishiguro.

February 7, 2012 “All the Pretty Horses” -The novel by the same title is by Cormac McCarthy.

April 10, 2012 “The Caine Mutiny” - This is the remastered production starring Humphrey Bogart in his finest performance. The novel is the same title written by Herman Wouk.

Girl's Night Out

Chairs – Genie Calgaard and Elizabeth Ford

This is a group intended for all levels of card players.

Enjoy light refreshments, fellowship, fun conversation and instruction with guidance from players who know the rules! Playing cards is a great way to improve your memory. Beginner and out of practice card players will be greatly welcomed.

Stitch in Time

Chair – Jodi Karjala

Anyone who sews, knits, crochets, etc, and for those interested in learning how. Have a particular project you’ve been putting off for years, or a bunch of mending to do? Always wanted to learn to sew or knit? For sessions of stitching, chatting and a cookie or two, come join us in the Ruth Taylor Theater Building Costume Studio (RT 329) The group will meet over the lunch hour, 11:30—1:00, dates to be announced.

Walking for Wome/Race for the Cure

Chairs – Claire Smith and Carol Mansen

Join us as we support the Komen Race for the Cure for the 4th year. As a runner, walker, or volunteer, everything we do makes a difference in the battle against breast cancer. Kick-off meeting TBA, race day May 12th.
