AN OPPORTUNITY FOR
ENGINEERING SCIENCE STUDENTS
TO DOUBLE MAJOR IN ENGR. SCI. & PHYSICS!!!
The Department of Physics & Astronomy has revised its requirements for a B.A. in Physics. We have designated several Engineering Science courses as equivalent to certain Physics courses required for the Physics Major. An Engineering Science student with a strong interest in Physics can now DOUBLE MAJOR in these two subjects by taking only 12 hours beyond what is already required for the Engr.Sci. B.S. This option may be particularly attractive to students with interests in electrical and/or optical engineering (e.g., quantum devices, photonics, etc.). A detailed list of required and equivalent courses is given below. If you have questions, contact Dr. Gordon MacAlpine, Chair, at gmacalpi@trinity.edu or x7424.
COURSES REQUIRED FOR COURSES REQUIRED FOR
THE BA IN PHYSICS: ENGINEERING SCIENCE AND ALSO
DESIGNATED AS EQUIVALENT TO THE
LISTED PHYSICS COURSE:
PHYS Equiv. Required in ENGR BS
1111 Intro Lab same
1112 Intermed Lab same
1311 Intro Mech same
1312 Intro EM & Waves same
2094 Seminar, 4 semesters 2181-3182 Engr Anal & Design III-VI (but no PHYS BA credit!)
2131/2132 SophExp Phys I/II 2120 Electric Circuits Lab, 2164 Electronics I Lab
3321 Stat Phys & Thermo 3327 Thermo I
3322 Class Mech&Dyn 2314 Mech II (Dynamics)
3323 Intro Mod Phys NO Equivalent
3335 Electro Flds NO Equivalent
4131 Adv Exp I 4126 Heat Transfer Lab
One Elective Credit 3123 Fluid Mechanics Lab
PLUS one of the following 3 options:
3131+3132 Photonics & Electronics Lab I/II
3325 Optical Phys
3333 Quantum Physics I
PLUS enough additional physics to total 30 hours
(This is either 3 or 4 hours depending on which of the three courses above were selected.)
Plus the following math courses:
1311 Calc I same
1312 Calc II same
2321 Calc III same
3336 Dif Eqns & Lin Alg same
and CSCI 1320 or the equivalent as approved by the Engineering Science Department.
The typical Engineering Science major would then be able to satisfy the requirements for a BA in Physics by taking the following Physics courses not required for the Engineering Science degree:
3323 Intro Mod Phys
3335 Electro Flds (Engineering Science students interested in Physics usually take this as an Engineering Science elective.)
Plus one of the following 3 options:
3131+3132 Photonics & Electronics Lab I/II
3325 Optical Phys
3333 Quantum Physics I
Plus enough additional physics to total 30 hours (This is either 3 or 4 more hours.)
