Dynamic Properties of Fluids and Liquid Crystals
Daniel Spiegel

Research in the Physics Laser Lab involves measurements of dynamic properties of simple fluids and liquid crystals. In the past, the work has focused on measurements of diffusion coefficients in such materials using laser-induced transient gratings; recently, we have initiated attempts to extend the grating experiments to pattern-forming non-equilibrium systems. A student who wishes to participate in this research would begin with some introductory experiments designed to help him/her understand the basic laser-optic and electronic techniques employed in the Laser Lab, followed by experiments in the design and control of pattern formation in fluids.
