Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory Dennis Ugolini LIGO is designed to detect what Einstein predicted, but what nobody has yet directly measured: gravitational waves from celestial events involving large masses, e.g., the merger of two black holes. Dr. Ugolini has several research projects suitable for physics and engineering science students involving improvements to LIGO optics that will allow the instrument to attain vastly improved sensitivity.
