Trinity University Department of Biology

March 1, 2000

To Friends, Students, and Colleagues of Dr. Melvin Frei:

A memorial endowment, titled the Melvin R. Frei Undergraduate Research Fund, to support undergraduate student research activities has been established at Trinity University by The Bruce and Susan Wohlfeld Family Foundation. Bryan Wohlfeld was one of more than 725 students in the Advanced Physiology class taught by Dr. Frei between 1973 and 1995.

The Wohlfeld family invites you to a reception in memorial tribute to the life and contributions of Professor Melvin Frei (1944 &emdash; 1998) on Friday, March 24, 2000 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm in the Great Hall of the Chapman Center on the campus of Trinity University.

You are encouraged to send your anecdotes describing your learning experiences and/or remembrances of Dr. Frei to the address above or by email to <rblyston@trinity.edu>. A Web site remembering Dr. Frei has been established at <www.trinity.edu/rblyston>. At the reception, Dr. Frei’s "famous" surgery videos will be shown, collections of his infamous physiology exams will be displayed, "mam phys" lab reports will be on hand, and a collection of his published research papers, which has been called "The Book of Mel" will be available. A memorial plaque will be unveiled.

We hope you will plan to attend the reception and help express our gratitude to the Wohlfeld family for their generous endowment honoring the memory of Dr. Mel Frei. You may wish to consider supplementing the endowment. Contribution information may be found on the Web site.

Please contact us by phone at 210.999.7243 or by email at <rblyston@trinity.edu> to let us know whether you will be attending the reception (by March 22).

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathy Ryan Dr. Robert Blystone
