Figure 1. This cross section is stained with osmium. The black rings reveal the myelination. The cut nerve axons are wrapped into bundles in a fashion similar to skeletal muscle. Magnification is 400X.
Figure 2. This longitudinal view of an axon reveals a Node of Ranvier. The gap is where the saltatory action potential is boosted.
Figure 3. This cross section reveals part of the spinal cord at low magnification. Posterior or dorsal is to the top. Ventral or anterior is to the bottom. Notice the difference between gray and white mater.
