In late October and November, the heavy weekly preparation for ACCT 5342 classes will decline substantially so you can have time to do your very best on this project. You should, however, be well into the project when Progress Reports commence as scheduled in the syllabus (they will also be graded).
In addition to writing up the team project, your team is scheduled to make a presentation of the project.
Please remember the difference between research versus scholarship. Research, the extension of new knowledge, is never as easy as scholarship focused upon existing knowledge. Research is a flicker of light where the leading edge of literature drops off into a black unknown. A clever idea is far more enlightening than an encyclopedic mind at the dark edge. My hope is that some of you will have a clever idea. Without a clever idea, you will have to resort to only scholarship. I can't tell you where to find clever ideas. All I can do is help set the stage for your fertile imagination.

Project topics will be randomly assigned from a pool of topics. At the moment the pool includes the following:
Team members will not all receive the same grades for the project. Students will be asked to evaluate the performance of other students in both the interim reports and after the projects are completed.
Team Project 1: The Future of XBRL in Financial Reporting
There is probably no happening in technology that is more important than merging of network database technologies with the XML meta-level scripting that might be viewed as the DNA tags for data. XML (eXtendable Markup Language) tags on data function much like DNA serves cells in biology. DNA contains all sorts of information about a cell's history, present state, and future state. DNA affects cell behavior individually and in systems of cells. XML will function in much the same way.
For financial reporting, efforts are under way to develop a subset of XML called XBRL (eXtendable Business Reporting Language). In ACCT 5342, one project team will write a research paper and a demonstration program for XBRL.
The "Team Research Report" should discuss the history of XBRL, its present state, and its future. Mention should also be made of EDGAR SCAN. If possible, project should also contain a "Team XBRL Demonstration" that will be presented to the class.

Team Project 2: Simultaneous extensions of the Northwind
database and accounting for
Northwind in NetLedger.com
This team project entails coding in most of the information from the Northwind database into a hypothetical company that I set up for the student team at https://system.netledger.com/. It is not necessary to key in all the products, customers, or invoices, but an effort should be made to include much of the data in the database. Where data details (such as addresses and account balances) are not available, students must supply hypothetical data.
After keying in the Northwind information, students are to extend both the database for new transactions, new customers, new suppliers, and new employees. Students are to record payroll transactions, customer sales, product purchases, etc. The intent of the project is to show how a relational database system can be maintained in parallel with a networked ledger system. Similarities and differences between these two types of systems should be the focal point of the student project write-up and class presentation.
Team Project 3: Development of a MS Access Training Case for Accountants
In this project, the team is to pretend that a client has requested that the team write a training tutorial for accounting in MS Access. Rather than use a ledger system such as NetLedger in Project 2, the Project 3 team is to build in a ledger system into a MS Access training program. The ledger system can be relatively simple since the purpose is for training rather than accounting for a complete business. However, a hypothetical business should be formed and accounted for in the tutorial.
Much of the material in your P&S textbook will be helpful in this project assignment.
