Professor Reed
studies the effects of deforestation on indigenous groups in the forests
of South America. Over the last fifteen years, he has been working with
Guarani villages on the
frontier of expanding colonization and agriculture in Paraguay. In two
books, Prophets of Agroforestry (1995) and Forest Residents and Forest
Managers, (1997) Reed proposes indigenous models of land use as alternative
strategies for sustainable development in forested regions.
Richard Reed is also studying fathers and childbirth. Beginning with the study of fathers' sympathetic childbirth in South America (couvade), he has moved to analyzing men's experience of pregnancy and birth in the United States. The work records men's stories and their experiences as they go through the rituals of becoming fathers (more on this may be found in the article here).
Prof. Reed teaches fieldwork in research methods in anthropology as well as Economic Anthropology and South American Indigenous Peoples. He is co-chair of the Women's Studies Program and advisor to ENACT (a student environmental organization) and the Trinity Anthropology Society.
