CHEM 2319
Quiz #3
Dr. Bachrach
February 6, 2008

1) Give the IUPAC name for the following compounds.

Parent is in red – it’s 2-hexene and is the 6 carbon chain that has the (a) the double bond and (b) the most substituents. So the name is
4-ethyl-2,5-dimethyl-3-propyl-2-hexene

2) Draw the most stable conformation of trans-1,3-diethylcyclohexane. Justify your answer.

First off, draw the chair cyclohexane conformation and then put in the two ethyl substituents in the 1,3 position – and place them trans! Then ring flip to see if one conformation is better than the other.

Since the two conformations have the same distribution of axial/equatorial substituents, the two conformations are equivalent in energy.
