Textbook

Gateway to the Chinese Classics: A Practical Guide to Literary Chinese, by Jeannette L. Faurot

Requirements

In general, each lesson in the textbook is divided into the following sections:

1.  Active Vocabulary and Proper Names (new words)

2.  Vocabulary Notes (grammar), Cultural Notes

3.  Exercises (for translation)

Daily assignments for each lesson in the textbook are as follows:

1.  Memorize the Active Vocabulary. Read the Proper Names.

2.  Read and study the Vocabulary Notes.

3.  The first day of class will begin with a quiz on the active vocabulary for that lesson. The remainder      of the first day (and sometimes part of the second day) will be spent explaining grammar.

4.   Prepare your own written translations of the Exercises. On the second day of each lesson, and then every successive day until we finish, we will spend translating passages from the Exercises aloud in class. We will cover on average one page of exercises per day until the chapter is completed.

5.   Conduct your translations in a journal that you correct as you proceed through the textbook.

Journals will be taken up and graded at the end of each lesson.

Grading

Attendance is mandatory. Daily participation will constitute 30% of the final grade. Quizzes will constitute 30% of the final grade. And Journal translations will count 40% of the final grade.
