THEATRE GRAPHICS GILLIAM
PERSPECTIVE DRAWING UNIT
Throughout the semester, we have investigated perspective drawing through freehand sketching. We have observed how the eye interrupts depth through overlapping objects, size and space variations, modeling, color and value changes and the sort. Drawing of this type employs your ability to “see” shapes in relationship to other and then accurately reproduce this onto a two-dimension page. Whereas the ultimate goal is to be able to recreate what we see on the stage through freehand perspective, at this point in your graphic communication development, your perspective may not be as accurate as is necessary.
This unit will explore mechanical perspective through the “one-point” perspective method. As you may know, there are two and three point perspective methods. For our purposes, one-point should suffice.
After introducing both the concept and process of one-point perspective, we will use class time to work on two specific exercises.
Perspective Exercise #1.
In class, you will draft a simple object in one-point perspective. We will add additional geometric shapes to the ground plan to increase your knowledge and skill. You will complete this exercise for our next class meeting.
Perspective Exercise #2.
In class, you will be provided a realistic interior ground plan. You are to complete the walls and basic structure for our next class meeting.
At the next class session, we will add furniture to the ground plan. You are to complete the entire drawing with furniture and set dressing as well as shading and cast shadows as you final project for this unit.
