THEATRE GRAPHIC ART SUPPLIES Gilliam
The following are SUGGESTED supplies. Quantity and quality may vary in
accordance with use and personal taste.
Throughout the semester, I will demonstrate a variety of art materials,
which may appeal to you. However,
for a basic set of supplies read below.
- Sketchbook.
You will need a separate sketchbook for your daily
graphics journal. Select
something that can be easily carried and will withstand constant use. The paper should have a good tooth
surface.
- Assignment
Sketch Pad. You will need a different
sketchbook or drawing pad for your in-class work and assignments. This should be at least 11 x 17,
perhaps 18 x24. Again, select
a pad with quality drawing paper.
- Sketching
Materials. Over the course of the semester,
you will develop a set of drawing tools that fit your personal needs.
- A
minimal list should include: #2 pencils, #3 H pencil, pencil sharpener
(it should be capable of sharpening various sized pencils. Electric sharpeners are the
best.)
- A
white eraser or two.
Additional supplies might include:
an eraser shield, a small straight edge or triangle (6Ó or smaller), .3mm,
.5mm, .9mm mechanical pencils with HB leads.
- Value
Sketching Materials.
- Minimal
supplies should include: a
sheet of black velour paper, 2-3 sheets of black construction paper, a
VERY SOFT which charcoal pencil, a white (soft) conte pencil or
stick. When purchasing,
explain that you will be drawing value sketches on velour paper. Hard pencils will destroy the
tooth on velour paper.
- Additional supplies might
include: gray scale conte
sticks, black conte sticks.
- Rendering
Supplies. You may already have a favorite
color medium. For the
purposes of this class, everyone will learn how to sue WATERCOLORS. With subsequent color assignments,
you may use whatever you desire.
Many designers use colored pencils or pastels for quick colored
sketches. If you decide to
experiment with either, purchase small introductory sets.
- Minimal
watercolor supplies should include:
a basic, inexpensive set of tube watercolors, 3 watercolor round
brushes (red stable are the best) small, medium and larger, a mixing
tray, water containers, soft towel, watercolor paper or board (if
selecting board, #300 cold press Crescent Board cut into 10 x 15 pieces,
masking tape.
- Additional
supplies might include: a
small natural sponge (make-up sponge), masking liquid, white gouache.
- Drafting
and Perspective Supplies. As the semester moves
forward, depending on individual needs, we may include a couple of hand
drafting assignment. However,
as this area has been addressed in the Introduction to Production
Techniques, we may explore other areas given our limited calendar. Nonetheless, you will need a basic
supply of drafting equipment for the Perspective Unit. Most of this equipment exists in
the classroom for the use in the classroom. You may not check it out. Supplies include:
ArchitectureÕs (not engineerÕs) scaled ruler, a minimum 10Ó or
larger set of triangles (45 degree and 30/60 degree), T-Square, 18 x 24
tracing paper. (Tracing paper
comes in a variety of grades.
I use very cheap paper for initial drafts with more expensive
vellum for final presentations.)
- Model
Building. Depending on the individual
interest in this area, some projects may expand to more finished
stages. The following
supplies will be required to execute a basic paper model.
- Two
sheets of 18 x 24, 2 ply, cold press, Bristol board.
- Scissors
- A
matte or Exacto knife.
.
- Art
Boxes. You may want to purchase carrying cases for your art
supplies. I use a fishing
tackle box for my watercolor supplies and another for my sketching
supplies. Of course, you can
always use a shoebox and zip lock bags. Regardless, I suggest some container for ease in
transportation.
