WE'RE NOT COMPLETELY USELESS

Divestment in Sudan
The Sudanese government spends approximately 80% of their revenues for military purposes which currently supports the genocide in Darfur. A number of universities and states have taken action by implementing policies of divestment from companies that conduct substantial business operations in Sudan. This campaign has led several companies to terminate their business with the Sudanese government.  Last Spring, ASR passed a resolution that was introduced and written by members of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) in which we urged the Board of Trustees Committee on Investments to adopt and implement a policy of targeted divestment of all University assets from companies that conduct significant business operations in Sudan. The Investments committee has recently agreed to divest and the fund managers are now working on implementing the new policy.  We would like to thank the members of STAND for all the great work they did on this issue. We would also like to extend our appreciation to Dr. Brazil and the members of the Board of Trustees Committee on Investments for listening to students and taking such an important step.

Student Rights
There is now a mutually agreed upon explanation of student rights created and endorsed by ASR and approved by Res Life. The statement is designed to provide residential students with the knowledge of what is expected of them when confronted by Res Life staff or DCS Officers. The goal of this statement is to better relations between students and Res Life and DCS by ensuring both parties are aware of TU policy and student rights. Take a look at the policy at http://www.trinity.edu/departments/student_affairs/student_conduct/student_rights.htm

White Boards in Study Lounges
Several Senators worked with Residential Life and Purchasing so that you could have dry erase boards in several study lounges.  Use them for diagrams, equations or a study break doodle.  Check them out in Witt 3rd, the North/South Foyer and Prassel 2nd.

TigerTaxi

With a TigerTaxi voucher, you can pay for any Yellow Taxi cab ride in the city from anywhere in the city using Tigerbucks. Forms can be found in the Witt Center, South, Thomas/Lightner 3rd, Prassel 1st, McLean, Heidi Lounge. Pick one up on your way out!

TAKING A STAND

Freedom of Speech on Campus

This ASR has a strong commitment to student rights.  In light of recent discussion regarding student free speech on campus, ASR passed a resolution reafirming our support for this important right on campus for all students, regardless of the message expressed. The resolution states that "a strict, impartial respect for freedom of speech on campus is the only way to ensure that the [vast array of experiences and opinions present on campus] translate into a constructive and enriching dialogue."  We believe that this student right is vital to the success of Trinity as an educational institution. To read the entire resolution, see the attachment. Also, check out Nat LaPier's guest column in this Friday's Trinitonian for more information.
