Interested in Joining Alpha Kappa Psi?
The selection process used by Alpha Kappa Psi is intended to mirror the general process associated with obtaining employment in a professional field. Each aspect, from the initial membership application, submission of a resume, the short essay, the interviews with active members, and the evaluation by the membership as a whole, very closely parallels the steps involved in the process of obtaining employment with a company. This is by design; the purpose of Alpha Kappa Psi is to assist in the professional education of its members in order to prepare them for a successful career.
Barring factors that are illegal and objectionable as criteria in any setting (i.e. race, national origin, sex, religion, disability, etc.), individual subjective judgment by the members may impact the ultimate evaluation of a candidate. There are examples in every endeavor of individuals who feel they have met the criteria for selection and are not selected. Alpha Kappa Psi is no exception.
Inherent in the evaluation of each candidate is the influence of both objective and subjective criteria. The objective criteria state that the candidate must:
-
Submit a membership application, a resume, and a short essay over the stated topic;
-
Attend Formal Rush and First Vote; and
-
Interview with all active members before First Vote.
Unfortunately, the subjective criteria used by each individual are impossible to enunciate. The overall sentiment is to identify individuals who have the ability to grow and learn in a professional sense and the potential to become outstanding leaders. This includes a demonstrated interest in business or economics, as well as prospective future involvement in the Fraternity as an active member.
Every member of the Fraternity evaluates each candidate’s application in a private manner. Due to the private nature of each member’s subjective evaluation of each candidate’s application, it is impossible to express the reasons for denial of any application for membership with accuracy. However, I can assure you that each member takes the voting process very seriously because it is his or her major voice in the future of Alpha Kappa Psi.
As with any process or work, constructive criticism is extremely valuable. I would appreciate the professional expression of your point of view on the recruitment and orientation process, as we are continually attempting to improve Alpha Kappa Psi’s ability to achieve its fundamental goal of professional development. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I wish you all the best regarding the recruitment process.
Sincerely,
Fernanda Zapata
