The Highland Games

Highland games are a Scottish tradition, and are now an annual fall event at Trinity. The highland games include a variety of competitions of strength and skill. At our Fall 2004 games we had a caber toss, stone throw, sheaf toss, plowman's walk, and a kilted relay. We even have one thrilling non-team event: the bonny knees contest. For our games, we have changed a few things to give even little people like myself a chance to play, but we try to keep it authentic. And this year, even the weather was properly Scottish in honor of the games.

Saint Patrick's Day

St. Paddy's typically occurs over Trinity's spring break week. We hope you all have a great deal of fun on your own on this most fun of holidays. But, just because we can't celebrate it right on time doesn't mean we can't have a brilliant good time! We're spreading St. Padddy's out a bit this year, so we are going to have a few events the week of March 7th. Monday will be a discussion of the origin and importance of St. Patrick and the St. Paddy's celebration. And as for the rest of the week, we are going to have music, dancing, and a lot of fun in the Tiger's Den. We are in the middle of planning this, so check back for more details and possible changes of plan.

Other bits of fun and joy

Weekly Meeting

We hold weekly meetings to discuss upcoming events, come up with new ideas, and generally have fun. Our meetings occur on wednesdays at 7pm in MMS 177. We welcome anyone at all who is interested in seeing what we are about, hanging out, or helping out with event.

TMN Dialogues

The TMN dialogues on race and religion are bi-weekly discussions on a variety of interesting topics related to diversity. Past GCS dialogues have been on the IRA and Northern Ireland, and a discussion of culture in groups where culture is not typically considered. This semester the dialogues are on Wednesdays at 5pm in the Chapman Gold Room. The GCS is cosponsoring a dialogue with the Hindu Student Union on March 9.

Movie Nights

Throughout the year we show movies of Gaelic interest, such as Braveheart and Waking Ned Devine.

Music

As music is a large part of Gaelic culture, we host music nights with either live bands or people's favorite recordings.

Storytelling

In keeping with the oral tradition, we also intend to host a storytelling night, in which people are encouraged to bring in folk tales or other stories to tell to the group

Ceili

The Ceili is the traditional Celtic dance party, with group dances and music, and we are planning an on campus ceili for this semester

The Texas Rennaisance Festival

The Texas Rennaisance Festival happens on six weekends every fall in Plantersville. If you want more info about the Renn Fest in general, check out their site. The past two years GCS has gotten a group together to go (in costume!). We are going next year we are planning to even camp atr the site.
