Hi everyone,
Here is an update to what is going on with the Sociology Club: We are currently working on bringing in two speakers early in November. I don't want to tell you any datesbecause we are in the early stages of planning, but I will give you a preview of who will be speaking and what they will be speaking about:
____________
PCUN organizer, Efraín Peña, spent 6 years working for one of the largest
NORPAC growers in Oregon, four of those years he sprayed pesticides without
proper safety equipment. When Efraín got involved with the union and began
speaking out for farmworkers’ rights, the grower responded with retaliation
and discrimination. Eventually, Efraín lost his job, but not his hope to
gain collectively bargained contracts for farmworkers who work on NORPAC
farms. He now works as a field organizer.
PCUN Organizer, Rebecca Saldaña, is a 1999 alumnus of Seattle University.
As an activist in MEChA and Campus Ministry, she led successful boycott
campaigns on her campus in support of Oregon farmworkers. She now works as
the religious liaison and a field organizer.
They will promote the importance of our national boycott of NORPAC frozen
and processed products, and why your solidarity is so important. NORPAC is
a large food processor cooperatively owned by over 200 Oregon growers who
refuse to respect the workers’ right to organize and negotiate fair
contracts. NORPAC sells over 60% of products to universities and other
institutions!
_____________
If you are curious (as we were) if NORPAC is affiliated with ARAMARK, then the answer is yes. We are currently investigating to what extent that affiliation is... Regardless this is an important issue due to the many issues involved such as immigration, social class, discrimination, worker's rights, and so on... Please check out their website at www.pcun.org for more information about the cause.
As we find out more about the details of when and where the speakers will be coming to Trinity we will send out more emailscalls.
Second, we now have a email listserv for the club. This will be a forum in which you can communicate with everyone in the group. If you have something from one of your classes, something you read, etc, then feel free to send it out on the listserv to get the opinions of everyone else. Also, if you have a project in a class and you need helpor if you want to send out a survey to the club then go ahead. It is really there for all of us to communicate with each other. To send a message simply send an email to SociClub@trinity.edu and your message will be sent to everyone on the club's email list.
In addition, if you are curious about the webpage... We really are working on this, but due to slow response time from various offices on campus and technical difficulties these things are taking longer than planned, but it will be up soon.
If you have any questions, or if you want to be taken off this mailing list then simply respond to this email and let me know.
Have a great day,
Chris Scheitle
