| Movie: Parthenon |
|
A 3-d rendering and fly-by of Athens' most impressive temple, the Parthenon (as produced by an architectural team at the University of Iowa). This temple is dedicated appropriately enough to Athena, goddess of the mind, and of logic and clarity. In the Oresteia, she stands in contrast to the other supernatural women in the play: the chthonic, earthly Furies, who haunt Orestes after the death of Klytemnestra. It's unclear until the very end whether her gender or her logic will prevail in the patently male vs. female trial scene; she declares, however, that she always favors the male, and therefore votes for Orestes.
The reconstruction of the statue of Pallas Athena (below) well displays her 'male' side: martial mien, all manner of battle accoutrements, with a winged nike held in the palm of her hand. The colorful paint on Athena is merely a guess, but a good one: ancient statuary (contrary to popular opinion) was in fact gaudily splattered with all manner of paint.
