TOPIC

Advertising may well be the most pervasive and persuasive communication form in America. The purpose of this course is to explore a history of advertising that will lead people to an understanding of the nature, scope and impact of advertising on both their public and personal life.

ASSIGNMENTS

The two tests will require you to integrate the discussions, readings, videotapes, and films. Papers will explore different topic areas. The first series of papers will require you to investigate major historical news events and advertising. The second paper will be a more in-depth opportunity to study historical advertising's products, appeals and images. Besides the tests and the papers, each student will be expected to come to class prepared to discuss the appropriate topics. All "handed-in" work must be typed. Show me your best work.

Specifically:

First Reports (25%) -- see syllabus

First Test (25%) -- 3/2

Second Report (25%) 4/13 (4/24)

Final Test (15%) -- 5/6
