Electronic Supplements to Accounting Texts and Other Electronic Teaching Aids Provided by Commercial Vendors

When searching for a vendor, I recommend that you go to the http://www.realnames.com web site:

If you know a product name and want to find what company makes that product or vice versa, you might triy http://www.realnames.com .   Web site URLs are also provided.  I typed in "Authorware" and was taken directly to the Authorware product section at the Macromedia web site. 

When searching for a book, I recommend that you go to the  http://isbn.nu/ price comparison web site:

Probably the best known online bookstores are Amazon at http://www.amazon.com and Barnes and Noble at http://www.bn.com .  The Powells book seller claims to be the largest new and used bookstore in the world at http://www.powells.com/ .  But there are other online bookstores. 

A free comparison guide that will find you the best deal among various bookstores is provided by Glenn Fleishman.    You can search even faster by typing the ISBN number following the "nu/" in the URL address. However, I do not recommend that you do this since it will take you directly to only one book seller (Amazon).  Instead I recommend that you do the following:

• Find the ISBN number by whatever means.  If you don't know the ISBN number, you can go to one book seller such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble to locate the book and the ISBN number.
• Go next to http://isbn.nu/ .  (I do not recommend adding the ISBN number directly to the end of the URL.)
• Enter the ISBN number in the box provided at http://isbn.nu/ .  For example enter 0130811521 in the box.
• Click on the "Compare" button to get a listing of alternative deals for the book.  For the above book, Books-A-Million has a significantly lower price that most other vendors.  However, when you read the footnote you notice that in order to get this lowest price you must have a Millionaire's Club Membership costing $5.00 per year.  However, the savings on this one book justifies the membership price.  Without this membership, Barnes & Noble has the best price on this particular book having ISBN 0130811521.  Amazon certainly does not have the best deal on this book.
• Carefully read the footnotes and note the shipping charge comparisons that are also provided.

The center explains what constitutes the not-for-profit sector, its size and scope, volunteering and links to related resources. The pathfinder bills itself as "the global gateway to civil society research and innovation" and includes links to resources such as academic centers and other NPOs.

The Internet Nonprofit Center offers news items as well as a free weekly e-mail subscription to its online newsletter. But the most useful aspect of this site is its frequently-asked-questions section, which covers a number of topics, including accounting, audits, compensation, risk management and software.

The NonProfit Times bills itself as "the leading business publication for nonprofit management." It includes an employment marketplace section and a resource directory. The magazine is offered free to full-time U.S. NPO executives "whose organizations qualify." Two other editions of their publication—for direct marketing and for financial management—are available.

• TRYING TO ADAPT conventional accounting software to handle the books of an NPO is like struggling to fit a square peg in a round hole. Their differences are so significant that without major customizing, for-profit software just can’t handle NPOs’ unique accounting needs.
• NPO ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE should be able to accommodate, among other things, multiple self-balancing funds, encumbrance accounting and special reports to meet FASB and/or GASB requirements.
• WHEN YOU EXAMINE products, you’ll probably find that you’ll have to make some trade-offs when it comes to software functions.
• EACH PACKAGE HAS GOOD and bad features. But in some cases, features this review gave low marks to may not be critical to the way you use the software. Features that were highly rated may not be important to you. Your needs should dictate which product is right for you.
• WHATEVER YOU DO, before buying, run comprehensive evaluations. It is not good enough to trust the claims of a vendor. Test the product with data typical for your organization.

I would appreciate any mention of my software / website at the AAA. I am in the process of converting my "WESTUTOR for Managerial Accounting" to "Managerial Accounting 97" and "WESTUTOR for Financial Accounting" to "Financial Accounting 97" . Even though the rights to both WESTUTOR products have reverted back to me from West-ITP, I have decided to develop my own brand name. Both products will selling from the August catalog of "The Learning Zone",which is a sub-set of the PC Zone catalog.

Also noteworthy, I will be offering free site licenses for both products for all college labs. All I ask is that the adopting professor advise their bookstore to maintain a stock in their campus bookstores, and publicize that availability to students. After I get out of my "production manager" mode, in creating the install sets for the products, I will be placing downloadable demos (2.5 meg each) for both products on my web site. Essentially, RJ Interactive is a "virtual publishing company" dedicated to bringing down the cost of courseware to students while increasing the inherent quality to both professors and students.

The mission of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law is to assist in "the creation and improvement of laws and regulatory systems that permit, encourage, and regulate the NPO sector in countries around the world." The site contains an online library of legal opinions and self-regulation and tax documents.

A Path to Information --- www.indepsec.org 

The Independent Sector's home page is also the home of both the Nonprofit Information Center and the Nonprofit Pathfinder. The center explains what constitutes the not-for-profit sector, its size and scope, volunteering and links to related resources. The pathfinder bills itself as "the global gateway to civil society research and innovation" and includes links to resources such as academic centers and other NPOs.

The Internet Nonprofit Center offers news items as well as a free weekly e-mail subscription to its online newsletter. But the most useful aspect of this site is its frequently-asked-questions section, which covers a number of topics, including accounting, audits, compensation, risk management and software.

The Nonprofit Online News site, like the one above, offers news items and a free weekly e-mail subscription to its online newsletter. Also available are newsletter issues from April 1997 through the present, as well as a section where NPOs can submit their own news items.

The Source for Management --- www.nptimes.com 

The NonProfit Times bills itself as "the leading business publication for nonprofit management." It includes an employment marketplace section and a resource directory. The magazine is offered free to full-time U.S. NPO executives "whose organizations qualify." Two other editions of their publication—for direct marketing and for financial management—are available.

• TRYING TO ADAPT conventional accounting software to handle the books of an NPO is like struggling to fit a square peg in a round hole. Their differences are so significant that without major customizing, for-profit software just can’t handle NPOs’ unique accounting needs.
• NPO ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE should be able to accommodate, among other things, multiple self-balancing funds, encumbrance accounting and special reports to meet FASB and/or GASB requirements.
• WHEN YOU EXAMINE products, you’ll probably find that you’ll have to make some trade-offs when it comes to software functions.
• EACH PACKAGE HAS GOOD and bad features. But in some cases, features this review gave low marks to may not be critical to the way you use the software. Features that were highly rated may not be important to you. Your needs should dictate which product is right for you.
• WHATEVER YOU DO, before buying, run comprehensive evaluations. It is not good enough to trust the claims of a vendor. Test the product with data typical for your organization.
