Accountancy Higher Education Programs Outside the United States
Bob Jensen at rjensen@trinity.edu
I am grateful to the publishing firm Richard D. Irwin, Inc. (Irwin) for funding this survey.
Irwin did not constrain what we asked for in the survey. Nor did Irwin constrain any
reporting of the results to the general public. All errors in reporting these results are
our own. Chapter 4 only contains part of the material in the questionnaire. Remaining
portions of the responses will be included in other chapters and appendices of this book.
Any college accountancy education programs that want their own data added to this document
should contact Professor Robert E. Jensen at Trinity University by email at rjensen@trinity.edu or by fax at 210-736-8134.

CAL Software on double-entry accounting (Warwick, D.T., Geddes, S.Y, Frost, G.)
(Introductory accounting/Accounting for non-accountants/MBA Accounting for Managers)
These use a standard PC. No specific authoring software was used. DOS level software is used to achieve widest use with distance education students. On disk.
Comments:
Student reaction to commercial electronic aids has been excellent. The research which has been conducted to determine the impact of these aids on students has only been as part of normal course evaluations. Student reaction to the locally-produced modules has been excellent, based on specific evaluation sheets. No research on locally-produced aids has been done beyond students' immediate reactions expressed in evaluation sheets. In answer to whether our institution will increase rewards for the development of these aids, it is unlikely.

The Chartered Accountants Student Society operates a website to provide resources (e.g. lecture notes, course outlines, administrative notices, helpful hints, links to other relevant websites, summaries of accounting standards) to students. This is sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and administered entirely by the students. We merely email documents to them. Both students and staff find this very helpful.

Comments:
Student reaction to commercial electronic aids has been varied. With large classes obviously there is a wide range of prior knowledge/experience, etc. Most students found little difficulty. Not used much now. Student reaction to locally-produced modules has been very positive. Research has been done in the form of classroom surveys at the end of the course to determine the impact of these aids on students. In answer to whether our institution will increase rewards for the development of these aids, yes. This is part of the criteria and may be included by staff members.

Student reaction to commercial electronic aids has been that they are useful; some say they are too expensive ($30 Canadian). I believe they are cheaper and more efficient than student or professor-run tutorials and are good for practice. Weaker students need this.

I have not found it necessary to make any changes to the material that you sent. However, I will mention that we are in the process of adding an ACCPAC project to our second Intermediate financial accounting course (Instructor: Morina Rennie). However this will not be ready for the classroom until the fall of 1998. I don't know whether you want this information in your database yet because the ACCPAC project is not currently in use.

Custom Software Development and Use:

Systems Accounting Cases (AIS/MIS)
Comments:
Student reaction to commercial electronic aids has been positive, time permitting. Informal, in-class surveys are the only faculty conducted research to determine the impact of these aids on students. Intranet management is key to planning effective use of IT resources. Student reaction to locally-produced modules has been good due to applied nature of case material. Informal research has been done by faculty indicating the impact is very positive as it provides hands-on, realistic learning experiences. In answer to whether our institution will increase rewards for development of these aids, not if they are only used internally. Without appropriate faculty support, this is very time intensive to produce and very risky at career level to undertake.

Comments:
Student reaction to commercial electronic aids has been positive to most. Faculty members have conducted research to determine the impact of these aids on students. If they are "good" they are probably more cost effective than building your own. NB in the UK the TLTP (public Sector/Quasi commercial) project products are a great advantage. Student reaction to locally-produced modules has been good. Faculty research has been done to determine the impact of the locally-produced aids on students. In answer to whether our institution will increase rewards for develpment of these aids, no.

The above use 386/486 IBM compatible PCs. No sound cards at present. It has not been transferred to CD-ROM.
Comments:
Student reaction to the use of commercial software and computer-assisted learning materials has generally been positive. Students appear to be increasingly comfortable with using computer-based learning material and "tools of the trade." Limited research has been undertaken to determine the impact of the new technologies. Staff are under pressure to introduce and use IT. "Fine tuning" occurs at a later date. Will our institution provide rewards for the development of computer-based learning? Possibly! It is difficult to obtain sufficient support/relief from teaching to develop this material.
