RELI-3458 Medieval Christian Mysticism

A survey of writings in the tradition of medieval Christian mysticism, from Augustine (d. 430) to John of the Cross (d. 1591). Major themes include the use of violent and erotic imagery, the move from Latin to vernacular languages like English, German, Spanish, and French, the importance of gender (whether the author's or the audience's) in the shaping of this literature, and the relevance of medieval mysticism to modern thought.
