The Dynamic Donald Byrd

The new, live archival release Cookin' with Blue Note at Montreux features a raw, gritty, and energetic live performance from trumpeter Donald Byrd's band in 1973. Born Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II on December 9, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, Byrd busted out in the mid 1950's to become one of the most influential, inspiring, and dynamic bandleaders in jazz. This week, we'll lead up to the new archival recording on Blue Note Records with varied tracks from Byrd as leader and collaborator.

The Legacy of Drummer Tony Williams

Born December 12, 1945, in Chicago, Ill., drummer and composer Tony Williams is perhaps best known for his mid 1960s stint performing with the Miles Davis quintet, but his explosive dynamics and innovative rhythmic development on the drum set adorns and enhances numerous recordings from many artists including Jackie McLean, Eric Dolphy, Herbie Hancock, and John McLaughlin, to name a few. From hard bop to fusion and beyond, the music of Tony Williams this week.

This week, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays with tunes for the season. Memorable and legendary classics from Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dexter Gordon, and Abbey Lincoln to new releases from Bill Cunliffe, Doc Watkins, and Jane Monheit will light up the playlists with bountiful, bright, and sometimes quirky interpretations of Holiday standards from the mainstream to the underground.

Today's leading jazz artists returned to studios and stages across the world in 2022 to record, perform, and produce works of deep significance and powerful resonance. A few of our top picks include recordings from drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and saxophonist JD Allen to local releases from Brandon Guerra with Andrea Vocab Sanderson and vibraphonist Toro Flores. KRTU was graced with a wide variety of new music and archival recordings this year to share and enjoy with our listeners. We'll hear some of the highlights and staff picks this week as we countdown to 2022.
