The MJQ: Gentlemen of Jazz

This week we'll kick off 2024 with music from a quartet that captured the essence, eloquence, and sophistication of jazz, classical, and the blues for generations of listeners and musicians. Born January 1, 1923, in Detroit, MI, vibraphonist Milt Jackson led the Modern Jazz Quartet through decades of live and studio recordings, with composer/pianist John Lewis, while representing one of the most graceful and articulate ensembles in jazz.

Max Roach Centennial Celebration

2023's PBS American Masters film "Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes" chronicles the life of the bebop pioneer and drumming icon. Born January 10, 1924, in Newland Township, NC, Roach created a significant body of work to be celebrated this year in New York and around the world. We'll pay tribute on-air to the master, with select tracks that represent the drumming legend's most acclaimed recordings.

"Triumphant Music": MLK, Jazz, & the Blues

The Berlin Jazz Festival was founded in 1964 in West Berlin. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke from his profound essay on jazz and its role in civil rights at the event's inauguration in Germany. This week on the Jazz Break at Noon, we'll listen to recordings from the festival, along with liberating studio tracks from 1964, and what Dr. King called "triumphant music" from Archie Shepp, Nina Simone, Charles Mingus, Donald Byrd, and many others.

Irene Schweizer and Intakt Records

Based in Zurich, Switzerland since 1986, the Intakt Records label was founded by Patrik Landolt after hearing Swiss Radio's high-quality recordings of pianist Irene Schweizer. Today, the label has grown to produce a wide array of meticulous musical crafts from Schweizer, Anna Webber, Michael Formanek, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Aki Takase, William Parker, and many other leading composers and improvisers.working today.
