Why Study the Classics at Trinity?
Classical Studies explores the history, art, archaeology, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. In our department, students encounter enduring questions about human thought, creativity, and experience—as much about mortality and justice as about food, jokes, and love. Classical Studies rewards curiosity at every level, which is why our faculty have devoted their academic careers to exploring the past.
Work closely with them in and out of the classroom, in the Roman World Lab, conducting archaeological fieldwork, or collaborating in research. Spend a summer or semester abroad in Rome or Athens.
Studying ancient Greek and Roman texts and learning about the cultures and histories of the ancient Mediterranean world builds writing, research, analytical skills, and critical thinking that prepare our majors and minors for whatever directions they take beyond graduation, whether it be graduate school in classics and related fields or health professions, law, or the business world.
Our objective is not that students simply accumulate knowledge, but that they synthesize it in a way they will find relevant throughout life, and perhaps above all, to provide them with a resource on which they can always draw to understand the ever-changing world in which we all live.
Challenging the Classics
I enjoy the breadth of classics—history, sociology, literature, language—incorporating all of these studies and research. Reading texts in their original language gives you insight into people who lived long ago but had similar experiences to us.
