Trinity University supports its student scholars in many ways, including our hallmark summer research program.
Trinity’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
SURF is a 10-week program that allows students to work on a project related to their faculty mentor’s research. Fellows typically receive:
- Stipends of up to $5,000 for full-time research work
- Free on-campus housing
- One course credit
Trinity offers dozens of SURF opportunities, whether organized through an academic department, campus center, donor fund or federally sponsored program.
Additional Funding Opportunities
Beyond the SURF stipends, Trinity students may seek out research funding through other campus-based and external programs. For example, some institutional scholarships come with stipends specifically set aside for scholarly work.

A select group of applicants will be invited to campus as finalists for an event on February 6, 2027, where two or three outstanding incoming first-year students will become Semmes Distinguished Scholars in Science.
This scholarship includes a $5,000 stipend to be used for research support, professional travel, materials, and supplies.

This national scholarship program is geared toward students with a strong commitment to careers in mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences and/or engineering. While not a research stipend in itself, this prestigious award is designed to support intellectually curious students.

Students can do for-credit faculty-mentored research during the academic year. This is a great option for students who are interested in research but don't know where to start. Talk to you department chair or research@trinity.edu for more information.
