Dr. Karen Waldron taught Undergraduate and Graduate students in Trinity's Department of Education and was Director of Special Education (1977-2005). Author of six books, numerous research articles, and frequent Media guest, she presented hundreds of programs supporting families at risk of poverty, abuse, and discrimination, consulting Nationally, as well as in Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and the Czech Republic. She received Women in Communication's "Headliner Award for Professional Achievement," and the "Friends with WINGS" Award (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving and Sharing) for support of uninsured women with Breast Cancer. She received Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center's "Distinguished Service Award" for her work as a Mediator and Mediator-Trainer for Community, Family, and Child Protective Services cases. For her Head Start collaboration with parents, teachers, and children, Family Service Association named her "Volunteer of the Year." She was a Founder of Winston School San Antonio, a Trustee for the George W. Brackenridge Foundation, and a Board Member for Gemini Ink Writing Arts Center. She was Director of the Diagnostic Clinic for the University of Texas Health Science Center, Department of Child Psychiatry. She founded and directed Trinity's Learning Clinic, as well as "The Inclusive Network" and community programs preparing educators of children and adolescents with special needs. For her career's work, she was acknowledged as a "Luminary Honoree" by Leadership Women Texas.

Community Service & Involvement

  • Founded and developed numerous innovative programs internationally, nationally, and locally, to support children and their families from low-income, diverse populations
  • Ongoing Media involvement on television, radio, news and as a magazine columnist, to increase public awareness of the needs of students with disabilities and to eliminate preconceptions about student limitations
  • Contributions as a Mediator and Mediator-Trainer for Community, Family, and Child Protective Services cases, for Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center 
  • Multiple Research articles and university textbooks, used as a resource for educators and parents.
  • Founded and served as Director of multiple Clinics to provide diagnostic and intervention services for families of children and adolescents with special needs
