I am foremost a cognitive psychologist who happens to investigate the cognitive causes, correlates, and consequences of emotional disorders. My interest in emotional disorders developed as a consequence of using depression as a special set of circumstances for testing more general principles of memory. What seems to happen to many investigators happened to me: A seemingly transitory puzzle became a career.
My very active laboratory thrives on the hard work of undergraduates, many of whom subsequently earn terminal degrees in psychology, neuroscience, and related fields. Some members of my lab have developed other careers(in such fields as mathematics, theater, and full-time meditation and yoga practice). Staying in touch with many of them is an important part of my personal mission.
My pedagogy has developed from my training in cognitive psychology. Instead of encouraging the sort of learning that aids performance on exams, I ask students to learn in ways that transfer to situations beyond the classroom and into the future.
