About

The Campbell and Eloise Smith Music Building is home to the Music Department, as well as the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall and is named for former Trinity Professor Campbell Smith. The Smith Music Building is a wing of what is commonly known on campus as the Dicke Smith Building and is part of the Ruth Taylor Fine Arts Center.

The Smith Music Building is full of students with instruments in hands  in hallways moving from classrooms, to private lessons, to voice lessons, and faculty-student mentoring sessions.

Ruth Taylor Recital Hall

Ruth Taylor Recital Hall is a state-of-the-art performance space and is the site of many music department recitals and concerts, University lectures, and outside events. The 312-seat hall features a raised stage and Wenger acoustical shells, positioned against a beautiful maple wood backdrop, creating a superb acoustical environment.

Practice Rooms and Classrooms

The building is made up of three floors that houses music classrooms, rooms for private lessons, labs, and faculty offices.

Our practice rooms are soundproof and equipped with Steinway Concert Grand Pianos. Spaces are open, inviting and composed to serve purpose and allow students to move about with musical instruments or with their groups constantly creating.

Music Department

Musical life at Trinity can be heard in the choir, orchestra, wind ensemble, and many other musical groups open to all students at Trinity. Students who choose to study performance, composition, or music education do so through ensemble participation, private lessons, and courses in music history and theory.

Degree Programs

Trinity offers a B.M. in performance, composition, or music education. For academic study of music, or students who want to double major in another field of study, we offer the B.A. in music.

Students can join various choral and instrumental ensembles that perform on campus and around the world.

Private Lessons

Trinity also offers private lessons in both instruments and voice to all students regardless of their majors. Lessons are taught by both full-time and part-time faculty.

Parking and Accessibility

General Parking

Parking is available in Parking Lot M, located on Stadium Drive. There is a ramp from Parking Lot M that follows around the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall to the main entrance of the Ruth Taylor Fine Arts lobby. Additional parking is available in the outdoor parking lot by the Dicke Smith Music and Art Building, just east of the Ruth Taylor Theater Building. 

Visitor Parking

There is designated visitor parking available on the Laurie Auditorium Orange Level and Lot B and at the Alamo Stadium.

Accessibility Accommodations
 

Parking
Laurie Auditorium Parking Garage has elevators with Braille signage and has accessible parking spaces available on all levels.

Elevators
There are two elevators available, one located near Laurie Auditorium, one in the Dicke Smith Building all elevators have braille signage.

Seating and Listening Devices
Reserved wheelchair and accessible seating in all the venues. Assisted listening devices are available for events at the box office.

Entrances
There are two accessible entrances to the Smith Music Building. The main entrance on the south side of the building with a ramp into the front lobby and one at leading from Laurie Auditorium, which has a ramp with direct access to the Dicke Art Building and the Campbell Music Building.  There is an additional ramp located in Parking Lot M that follows the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall around to the main entrance lobby.
