Through strikes, spares, and gutter balls, students hit the lanes for a good time
Back when William H. Bell Athletic Center was the Earl C. Sams Facility, students could work out with weights, cardio…and bowling.
On a smaller scale with limited funding, Trinity initiated sports such as golf, bowling, track, and soccer by the mid-1960s. The Sams Center featured such luxuries as a bowling alley where the Stumberg Fitness Center is now located, an indoor riflery range, and a ballroom where the natatorium now stands.
Students and faculty both made use of the once-popular feature. In addition to a school bowling team, there were faculty bowling leagues and intramural bowling teams.
The bowling machines broke down more and more frequently in their old age, and administrators felt that replacing them would be too costly. Against the protests of those who wanted to keep a sport for slower students, the Stumberg Fitness Center replaced the 26-year-old bowling alley when the Sams Center became the Bell Athletic Center in the 1991 renovations.
