Norman Sherry, the former O. R. and Eva Mitchell Distinguished Professor of Literature and Professor Emeritus of English, died on Oct. 19, 2016. He was 91 years old.
Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, Sherry was a professor of English literature at Lancaster University before coming to Trinity University in 1983. An expert on the British novel, biographer, and educator, he taught courses on the British novel such as "Politics and the Novel" and an upper division seminar on British novelist Graham Greene. Sherry retired from Trinity in 2010.
Internationally known as the authorized biographer of Greene, Sherry spent nearly 30 years retracing Greene's steps through Mexico, Liberia, Cuba, Vietnam, Haiti, the Congo, and numerous other locations that were backdrops to Greene’s major works. He considered himself a "literary detective." The results of his extensive research was a massive three-volume biography titled The Life and Times of Graham Greene. Volume one earned Sherry an Edgar Allan Poe Award. Volume two received designation as "one of the best eleven books of 1995" by the editorial staff of The New York Times Book Review and inclusion in Books of the Century: A Hundred Years of Authors, Ideas, and Literature (1998). Sherry, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, also authored biographies on Joseph Conrad, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, and Jane Austen.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 4603 St. Johns Way, San Antonio. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. prior to the Rosary. A funeral mass will be held 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio.
