Ron Nirenberg Speaks with Texas Monthly About His Future
The four-term mayor and Trinity alumnus admits he is still interested in politics and public service

Ron Nirenberg ’99, Trinity University alumnus and new Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice in the Department of Communication, spoke candidly with Texas Monthly about his four-term tenure as mayor in the 7th largest and one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. The conversation looks back on Nirenberg’s eight-year tenure (2017–June 2025), which he characterizes as “tumultuous,” citing three overlapping pressures: the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020’s racial-justice protests, and persistent state-level efforts to preempt local control.

Devoted to the basics of good governance, Nirenberg admits that he’s not done with politics or public service.
