“[Trinity] recovered 30 to 40 trays although it lost far more than that to snow-crazed Trinity students who used them for sleds.” - 1985 Trinitonian
Snow at Trinity has been a rare, slightly disruptive, but always welcome recurrence. When students count the reasons why they chose to come to Trinity and San Antonio, the ever-so-rare snow shower typically isn’t the first thing to come to their minds. Nonetheless, the few times snow has blanketed Trinity’s campus, it’s garnered heaps of attention from the student body. In January 1985, the worst snowstorm in San Antonio history hit Trinity. While it didn’t cause significant structural damage, the 13.5-inch record snowfall caused about 10 percent of the staff of Mabee Hall to camp out inside the building for the entire weekend.
After nearly three decades of waiting, the Trinity campus was kissed by a second wave of snowfall. In 2017, a winter storm surprised an entirely new generation of Tigers when it downed power lines and almost had students convinced that school was going to close. Nonetheless, it made for some great snowball fights and sculptures of snowmen, snow castles, and even snow beer bottles.
“My entire reality has been turned upside down in the last 24 hours. I’ve never seen snow before—why do you think I’ve been wishing everyone a ‘Happy Snow Day’ and building snow sharks?” - 1985 Mirage
