Trinity to Hold Spring Commencement May 14
Three speakers will highlight two graduation ceremonies on campus

SAN ANTONIO — Trinity University will hold two commencement exercises on Saturday, May 14, conferring degrees on a total of 479 undergraduate and graduate students. The separate events will have three speakers, and the recipient of the University’s most prestigious award for teaching and advising will be announced.

The graduate commencement begins at 9 a.m. in Parker Chapel for 64 graduates who will receive master’s degrees in teaching, school psychology, or accounting. The speaker is Tim Miller ’93, ’94, ’98, the director of educator preparation programs at the Texas Education Agency. A reception will be held on the Esplanade and in the Coates University Center immediately following the graduation ceremony.

The ceremony for 415 undergraduates will be at 10:30 a.m. in Laurie Auditorium, where seating is limited and tickets are required for guests and relatives of candidates for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music degrees. There will be two speakers, including Valerie Alexander ’90, and Madison Smith, a graduating senior who will represent the class of 2016.

At the undergraduate commencement, the Dr. and Mrs. Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship Award will be announced recognizing a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising students. Leslie Hollingsworth ’88, president of the Trinity University Alumni Association, will welcome the new graduates into the association. The President’s reception will immediately follow the ceremony on the Esplanade and in the Coates University Center.

Miller earned his bachelor’s of Arts in Humanities in 1993, a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1994, and a Master of School Administration in 1998 from Trinity. He began his educational career in 1994 as an elementary special education teacher in the San Antonio Independent School District and later became an instructional technology coordinator, an assistant director, and director of educational technology. He went on earn his doctoral degree in education before serving as the principal of Eisenhower Middle School in the Northeast Independent School District. In 2009, Miller served as assistant superintendent and then superintendent of Cleburne Independent School District. He has taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Concordia University and the University of the Incarnate Word. He now serves as director of Educator Preparation Programs at the Texas Education Agency.      

Alexander received her bachelor's degree in economics at Trinity in 1990. After graduation she earned an M.S. in environmental economics and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Following a career as a corporate securities lawyer, Alexander went on to become a venture capital consultant, an investment banker, an executive at two media start-ups, and a screenwriter. She now tours the country speaking about happiness as a second language, the subject of her multiple books.    

Smith ’16 is a communication and Spanish double major from Evergreen, Colo. At Trinity, she has been an arts and entertainment writer and editor for the Trinitonian student newspaperassociate producer for Tiger’s TV Not So Late Show, and a member of the Alpha Chi Lambda social sorority. After graduation, Smith plans to stay in San Antonio for a year and work before attending graduate school or moving to a new city.
