Turkey Trot
Burning calories before the big day

Every year around Thanksgiving, students, faculty, and staff burn off anticipatory calories with the Turkey Trot, a roughly two-mile race around Trinity’s campus. The race began in 1967, and then-intramural director Jim Potter ’63, ’67 says the race’s namesake derived from the 16-pound grand prize: a frozen turkey.

First-place finishers still receive a frozen turkey as their grand prize.

In the ’60s, runners competed on behalf of their clubs and received intramural points for their organizations. Now, the race is every man for himself, with faculty, staff, and students still competing for the frozen turkey grand prize. James Hill, the voice of the Tigers, starts the runners off with his famed turkey cap and an airhorn.

While Jim Potter doesn’t organize the race anymore, his name will forever be associated with the race: Runners still begin and end the course at the Jim Potter Intramural Field.
