Our department's faculty maintain active research programs which collectively span a large swath of the mathematical landscape---from the purest realms to the most contemporary applications. Specific fields of research activity in the department are number theory, combinatorics, dynamical systems, geometric group theory, functional analysis, statistics, fluid dynamics and computational mathematics, and applications of mathematics to social choice and to sports. Their work is often supported by grants from external agencies like the NSF or the NIH.
The department encourages students from the early stages to collaborate with faculty members in research projects. Those collaborations take place both during the regular school year and over the summer and they often include financial support for the students either from Trinity or from external agencies. The research opportunities afforded to our students have resulted in student publications in refereed journals and in student presentations at professional meetings of national and international scope.
