About

As part of the Ruth Taylor Fine Art Center, the Jim and Janet Dicke Art Building is a state-of-the-art facility that services the study, management, production, and presentation of fine art. Seminar spaces and classrooms allow students and faculty the means to evaluate artifacts and discuss theory. A Visual Resource Center manages the visual collections that support the Art History programming. Studios in eight disciplines support the production of student art works.

The Michael and Néomi Art Gallery is a formal exhibition space that features student work, faculty research, as well as curated exhibitions spotlighting work from nationally and internationally recognized artists.

The light-filled space is a hub for art enthusiasts from the campus and San Antonio communities. Regular student presentations, guest lectures, and exhibitions make the Dicke Art Building an enriching destination providing aesthetic experiences and topics for discourse.

Hours of operation

Monday-Friday: 7 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Digital

The Digital Studio is equipped with state-of-the-art computing hardware and software, large format printers, professional scanners, and print-finishing stations which provide the necessary means to produce high quality images.

Drawing

The Drawing Studio is a large, high-ceilinged, flexible space equipped with work tables, easels, and drawing mules. North-facing clerestory windows, as well as an entire wall of glass on the east side, add architectural drama and fill the space with light.

Painting

The Painting Studio is open, airy, and bright with a balcony offering a scenic downtown San Antonio view. The studio is equipped with easels, work tables, light controls, and ventilation to suit a variety of painting media.

Photography

The Photography Studio includes facilities and resources for both analog and digital photographic processes. The darkroom contains well-maintained enlargers ranging from 35mm to 8x10 inch format and a downdraft ventilated sink. A wide range of photographic equipment is available for student use.

Printmaking

The 2,500-square-foot Printmaking Studio is designed to accommodate students working with intaglio, lithographic, screen printing, and relief (including Japanese-style woodblock techniques) printing processes. The studio is also equipped to support Western and Asian style papermaking and bookbinding applications.

Clay

The Clay Studio is designed to provide adequate workspace for well-rounded sculpture practice. Stationary equipment such as a rolling press and extruding equipment (pneumatic and digital) augment a broad collection of hand tools required for clay construction and porcelain casting.

Plaster

The Plaster Studio is an environmentally controlled space furnishing plaster mold making processes. Molds produced in this area are used in porcelain casting applications as well as for drape and slump molds for clay.

Wood

The Wood Studio is equipped with commercial grade stationary tools as well as a complete inventory of hand tools. The space is furnished with workbenches and opens up to the sculpture patio allowing students the necessary space to design three dimensional projects.

Artwork throughout the Building

Throughout the Ruth Taylor Fine Arts Center and the Dicke Art Building you will find several collections of artwork that include sculptures from the late Phil Evett, professor emeritus of art and noted sculptor. Among his legacy as a part of Trinity University's art collection is his piece Millennium 2000 an 8-foot tall wood sculpture located in the foyer of the Dicke Art Building and a bust of Trinity President James Laurie in the lobby of Laurie Auditorium.

Classrooms

Dicke Art offers dedicated spaces designed to meet specific needs of the Art and Art History curriculum. Classrooms optimize the study of resources. Theatre and round-table style classrooms foster collaboration, discussion, and in-depth study as students work toward more specialized research in their fields of study.

Seminar Room

The Seminar Room provides a round-table experience nurturing discourse for upper division Art History classes, Contemporary Issues, and Senior Capstone courses.

Visual Resources Collection

The Visual Resources Collection acquires, produces, and archives high quality, annotated images to support the Art History course work and faculty research. The VRC is staffed by a curator. The adequate space and equipment allow for numerous student employees to lend support in managing the steady stream of resource requests by faculty. The space and technology allowed the resources to be managed according to current professional trends.

General Parking

Parking is available in the outdoor parking lot by the Dicke Smith Music and Art Building, just east of the Ruth Taylor Theater Building. There is designated visitor parking available on the Laurie Auditorium Orange Level and Lot B and at the Alamo Stadium.
