Ten Trinity University students have received the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers thanks to the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation.
Trinity students, Stella Affognon, Matthew Colliflower, Meghan Adolphsen, Nicole Spooner, Madelinie Grimes, Nicholas Champion, Khaniya Russell, Collin Gillespie, Kate Jones-Waddell, and Ana White will receive a $10,000 scholarship each year, as well as ongoing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities facilitated by the Raise Your Hand Foundation in order to better prepare them for the teaching profession.
“This scholarship supports some of Texas's most promising new teachers as they learn to teach in the state's best teacher preparation programs,” says Laura Allen, education professor. “For MAT candidates, the $10,000 can make the program financially feasible, when it may not be otherwise."
The Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers is part of a $50 million Raising Texas Teachers initiative sponsored by the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation designed to elevate the prestige of the teaching profession in the state as well as provide better education to students in economically disadvantaged areas.
“We are excited to welcome the second round of Charles Butt Scholars into our growing network of aspiring teachers,” says Shari Albright ’83,’86, president of the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation. “These students are passionate about making a tangible difference for the future of Texas, and they are eager to receive the ongoing mentoring and professional development that will put them in the best position to be the best teachers they can be.”
Trinity University is one of 11 Raising Texas Teachers partners receiving scholarship funds. After more than 370 candidates from these 11 universities submitted a written application, a competitive selection process which involved finalists participating in interviews, group activities, and demonstrating a teaching lesson, 134 scholars were selected as scholarship recipients. Over time, the scholarship program will grow to include at least 500 scholars annually and expand to include leadership development opportunities for the state’s top high school students interested in a career in education.
