Trinity University Elects New Board Officers
Health care executive and Trinity alumnus to serve as chairman of the Board of Trustees

St. Louis health care executive Michael F. Neidorff '65 has been named chairman of Trinity University's Board of Trustees. He will serve a two-year team and succeeds Douglas D. Hawthorne '69 '72, a Dallas Fort Worth civic leader and health care executive.

Other officers named to the Board of Trustees are San Antonio businessman L. Herbert Stumberg '81, vice chair and chairman-elect; research scientist Katherine Klinger '72, secretary; and San Antonio business executive J.R. Hurd, treasurer.

Michael F. Neidorff '65 is the chairman, president, and CEO of the Centene Corporation, a Fortune 500 health care company that provides services to government sponsored health care programs. In March 2016, Centene completed a $6 billion acquisition of Health Net, which made Centene the largest Medicaid managed care company in the U.S. Neidorff oversaw the merger and continues to lead the combined company.

In addition to his membership on the Trinity Board of Trustees, Neidorff also serves as treasurer of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, chairman of the National Urban League, and as a board of trustee member at the following organizations: the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the St. Louis Science Center. Before joining Centene in 1996 as CEO, Neidorff worked for 18 years with Bayer AG and Miles Laboratories. He also started Physicians Health Plan of Greater St. Louis in 1985, a subsidiary of United HealthCare Corporation.

A political science major while at Trinity, Neidorff earned a master's in industrial relations from St. Francis College. Neidorff, his wife Noémi, and Centene donated $5 million to the Center for the Sciences and Innovation, where the Centene Corporation-Michael F. and Noémi Neidorff Center for Innovation in the Sciences, Health Care Management, and Liberal Arts bears their names.

L. Herbert Stumberg Jr.

L. Herbert Stumberg Jr. '81 is the president of Air Measurement Technologies, a San Antonio firm that designs and develops digital pressure and temperature computers for firefighters. He and his late partner James Fulton invented a safety device for firefighters and other emergency personnel that is integrated in self-contained breathing machines.

Previously, Stumberg was a partner at Ryckman & Associates, where he oversaw real estate partnerships, and a co-founder of Orca Industries, which designed and developed the first underwater decompression computer for both recreational and industrial industries. A business administration major, Stumberg went on to earn his MBA at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a former member of Trinity's National Alumni Board. Stumberg and his brother, Eric, established the Louis H. Stumberg Venture Plan Competition in memory of their late father, a former member of the Board of Trustees. The Stumberg Prize is held annually to celebrate entrepreneurship among Trinity students attempting to launch businesses.

Katherine Klinger is the senior vice president of Genomics and Genzyme Corporation in Framingham, Mass., overseeing the group's research and development division. She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Trinity and went on to earn a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Texas. Klinger has served as a Trustee since 2005.

J.R. Hurd is chairman of HurdCo, Inc., and a general partner of the Hurd family companies. He is an executive committee member of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. In addition, he is on several other boards to protect and preserve the oil and gas affairs of Texas. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Texas at Austin Law School, Hurd has been a board member since 2004.
