Trinity Voices Shine in Texas Public Radio Story of Las Abuelitas de Oro Folklórico Troupe
Trinity University’s Ivanna Bass Caldera and Katherine Vinton, Ph.D., help share their story of heritage, joy, and lifelong learning

A spirited group of San Antonio grandmothers, ages 73 to 86, known as Las Abuelitas de Oro, are celebrating Mexican heritage through vibrant folklórico dance. Their mission goes beyond performance as they partner with elementary students at Hawthorne Academy to teach dance, culture, and confidence across generations. Katherine Vinton, Ph.D., assistant professor of education at Trinity University, praised the group’s impact: “I saw them and thought, ‘oh my goodness, we need to get these ladies into every single school in San Antonio, because because they’re such a great example of our culture and how it’s transmitted through intergenerational experiences.’”

Ivanna Bass Caldera, a Trinity senior majoring in Communication and Global Latinx Studies with a minor in Spanish, wrote the Texas Public Radio feature. As a TPR intern and campus radio host, Bass Caldera highlights the cultural bridge the Abuelitas represent, showing how age, tradition, and education intertwine to sustain community heritage. Read or listen to the full story here
