Summer Bridge Program
Initiative for underrepresented Tigers vastly improves retention and academic outcomes

Since 2010, Trinity’s Summer Bridge Program has given first-generation and underrepresented first-year students a chance to come to campus early and transition to college life.

For two weeks before the rest of campus moves in, these Tigers get an introduction to the college-level coursework, writing, and time-management skills they’ll need to succeed when the semester starts. They also learn about all the academic resources Trinity has to offer, and get comfortable with campus before the flood of other students arrives in August.

More than 300 Tigers have now gone through the program. Sheryl Tynes, vice president for Student Life, says the data shows that the program has consistently positioned these students not just to match—but often to exceed—their fellow Tigers’ academic performance.

Tynes notes that “the impetus to start this program even came from our students: Daniel H. Galindo (now an attorney) and I had talked about an Allies program for first-generation, Pell-grant students. Daniel kept pressing me about when was I going to make it happen, so we launched.”

“This has honestly been the most important work I've ever done,” - Sheryl Tynes

LeeRoy Tiger is Trinity's lovable mascot, spreading #TigerPride wherever he goes.
