Dr. Pat Semmes brings higher education experience, passion for student success

Trinity University is pleased to announce the appointment of Patricia Semmes, Ph.D. to the Board of Trustees. She begins her appointment immediately.

Semmes is a former professor at Trinity in the department of computer science. She was instrumental in establishing and directing the university-wide computing skills program that continues today. She is recognized as a pioneer in the application of technology in the classroom and was instrumental in the evolution of the Texas Computer Education Association.

“I am delighted to welcome Pat to our Board. As a former professor at Trinity, she brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and a unique perspective as a former faculty member,” says Melody Meyer '79, chair of Trinity’s Board. “She cares deeply about Trinity and is invested in ensuring that our students are ready to lead a life of impact and fulfillment.”

Pat Semmes and her husband Tom Semmes, in conjunction with the Semmes Foundation, have been longtime supporters of Trinity. The Semmes Distinguished Scholars in Science award provides a full-tuition scholarship and stipend for two to three outstanding incoming first-year students who plan to study in a STEM-related field. The Semmes Foundation was also a significant contributor to the newly-completed Chapman-Dicke-Halsell complex.

“I am excited to bring my perspective to the Board of Trustees and I look forward to working with them,” says Semmes. “I’m committed to further enhancing Trinity’s student experience, to help grow the university’s reputation as a national leader in a 21st-century liberal arts education.”

Prior to coming to Trinity, Semmes taught mathematics at UTSA and Montgomery College in Maryland and was a cryptanalyst at the National Security Agency. As a co-op student, she worked at a Navy engineering research lab, programming IBM’s first commercial computer that analyzed data to silence the noise on submarines.

Semmes received her Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Texas at Austin, her M.A. in mathematics from the University of Maryland, and her B.A. in mathematics from the American University.

She served as president of the Alamo Heights School Board and mayor pro tem of the City of Olmos Park. She is an officer and director of the Semmes Foundation and currently serves on the board of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation. She is also on the board of SA 100, an organization of women leaders in San Antonio.
