Students have the opportunity to study film principles in history and theory, while putting them into practice through video production, photography, and writing.

Candidates for a baccalaureate degree must fulfill the requirements for a major as listed in the courses of study bulletin. The courses of study bulletin is the official source of information regarding degree requirements, academic policies, and academic majors and minors at Trinity University.

Pathways Curriculum

Students must complete the Pathways Curriculum in order to receive a baccalaureate degree. The Pathways Curriculum has six curricular requirements, and three optional elements that provide the foundation in the liberal arts and sciences for all the bachelor’s degrees awarded by Trinity University. Through these requirements, students acquire the necessary skills and disciplinary perspectives to navigate complex questions at Trinity and in their post-graduate lives.
Introduction to Film Studies
Delve into the artistic, cultural, and scholarly importance of film as a complex art form, and explore the development of the industry and film genres, as well as the construction of the audience.
International Cinema
Uncover the unique and important visions of the human experience through international films of political, ideological, or sociological significance.
Black Images in Film
Examine the depictions of blacks in America cinema from 1915 to present. This course introduces students to the history of blacks in film and examines how film has been used as a tool of social and political commentary. Attention will be given to issues of race, color, class, and gender.
Video Communication
Workshop on the theory and practice of video production. Students write, photograph, and edit short video projects, while considering the relationship between audiovisual style and meaning. May be repeated when topics vary. Will be offered for either 3 or 4 credit hours.

Students attend film festivals and showings throughout the year, including:

Stieren Arts Enrichment Series
This event brings to campus a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, communication, literature, art history and aesthetics. Trinity departments regularly bring in performers and speakers ranging from filmmakers, graphic designers, and beyond.
Student Projects
Students study principles of film through both theory and practice. Applying their findings, students may use state-of-the-art equipment through the Department of Communication--including cameras, sound and lighting equipment, updated editing software, and an in-house computer lab with both Macs and PCs.

TigerTV puts students on camera, in the writing room, in the director’s chair, and behind the camera. With renovated digital HD facilities, TigerTV’s state-of-the art studios include broadcast-quality, high-definition equipment. Joining this team connects you to a tight-knit, supportive community.
Service Learning
Many faculty have ties to off-campus art and film organizations and can assist students in finding internships in San Antonio, Austin, and across the country. Students often participate in numerous film festivals on campus and in the wider San Antonio community.
