San Antonio’s Inaugural Nurturing Hope Student Leadership Academy

Nurturing Hope SA is a citywide conversation on civic discourse, led by students from Trinity University, the Alamo Colleges District, and UTSA.

This year-long leadership program brings together students to develop skills in communication & teamwork

  • Conflict resolution & critical thinking
  • Problem-solving & self-expression
  • Collaborative cultural exchange
A colorful handmade poster defines equity. The text reads: “Equity means making things fair by giving people the support they need based on their starting point, not just treating everyone the SAME!” The word “SAME” is written in large red, blue, orange, and green letters. Around the text are hand-drawn outlines of hands decorated as turkeys, signed with names like Devon, Jody, and Gianne. Two people hold the poster up on a wall.

Program Benefits

Inspired by Northern Ireland’s Corrymeela peace and reconciliation curriculum, the program encourages dialogue on hope, home, unity, and belonging—fostering connections across diverse backgrounds and faith traditions.

Building a community through dialogue
Through campus meetings and community visits, students will engage in meaningful discussions on civic engagement and public humanities. The experience culminates in student-led dialogue events tackling key issues facing San Antonio.

Get Involved

A small group of students sit around a black tablecloth-covered table, reading newspapers and talking during a workshop. Drinks and personal items rest on the table. In the background, more people are seated at tables, and a colorful altar display with fabric, candles, and photos is set up against the wall.

A large group of students and faculty pose together outdoors in a sunny courtyard, standing under the shade of leafy trees. Behind them are stone buildings, green plants, and a striped umbrella. Everyone is smiling and leaning slightly forward for the group photo.

A facilitator writes on a large whiteboard during a workshop. On the left side, a flowchart of concepts includes “knowing self,” “address differences,” “modeling empathy,” “fostering interpersonal connection,” and “open mind,” connected under the theme “Bridging Divides.” On the right side, a list titled “Facilitator Troubleshoot” includes: “listen + validate” and “keep an eye on time.” Tables and chairs are in the foreground.
