Know before you go to avoid citations and fines
Effective: January 1, 2025
To ensure safety, accessibility, and fair use of campus facilities, violations are categorized by severity levels, each with corresponding fines and conditions. Infractions of parking regulations are the responsibility of the person who registered the vehicle on campus.
I Was Issued a Citation
Traffic and parking citations are the responsibility of the person who registered the vehicle to park on campus.

Level 1: $50 fine
Minor Infractions
These are minor parking violations, such as:
- Parking outside a designated or marked space.
- Parking in a service area, loading area, or no-parking zone.
- Parking blocking a dumpster.
- Unauthorized overnight parking.
- Parking on a crosswalk.
- Parking against the flow of traffic.
Level 2: $70 fine
Moderate Infractions
These violations create moderate disruption, such as:
- Parking an unregistered vehicle or failure to properly display permit. Buy a permit now to avoid a citation.
- Parking in an unauthorized parking lot
- Using more than one parking space or obstructing other vehicles.
- Parking in a visitor space without authorization.
Level 3: $90 fine
Serious Infractions
These pose safety risks or involve misuse of permits, such as:
- Blocking emergency vehicle access or building entrances/exits (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Displaying a false or altered permit (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Parking in a specifically reserved space indicated by posted sign (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Parking on the grass, unpaved area, or sidewalk
Level 4: $150 fine
Critical Infractions
These obstruct critical access points and violate legal protections:
- Unauthorized parking in or blocking a handicapped area (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Parking in a fire lane, along a red curb, or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant (Appeal Not Allowed).
Moving Violations
Varied Fines
Moving violations compromise road safety:
- Minor traffic violations: $50.
- Disregarding stop signs or unsafe speed: $100 (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Operating on the wrong side of the road: $100 (Appeal Not Allowed).
- Uninsured motorists: $250 (waivable with proof of insurance to TUPD within 10 business days from issuance).
How to file an appeal
- If you are a current student or employee and feel that a citation is unwarranted, file an appeal online within 14 days from the ticket issuance date through MyParking.
- Once the appeal has been reviewed, you will receive a response by e-mail.
- If the initial appeal is denied, the next level in the appeal process is through the Parking and Traffic Committee. Instructions to submit this appeal are included in the response e-mail.
